Getting Ready!

July 19, 2015

Fourteen households around the state probably have variations on the same theme this weekend – a duffle bag with lightweight clothing, snorkel gear, headlamp, sunscreen and a field guide beside a checklist of “what to bring” – taking up space as final preparations are made for the 2015 Educators of Excellence institute in Belize. Since our orientation in May, participants have read “The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw” by Bruce Barcott and “Jaguar” by Alan Rabinowitz to gain some background knowledge of the places we will visit. They have purchased and practiced with their snorkel gear and binoculars, walked in the humid heat of North Carolina to get acclimated, and worked with their team on the activity they will share at St. Stephens School in Monkey River Village.

But now, with the daunting task of getting all the gear in one checked bag, and committing to which shirts to bring and whether to bring one water bottle or two, the trip is becoming “real.”

Please follow along as we share our learning adventure in Belize. We plan to post every day (connectivity permitting) and will answer any questions you send our way!

Well, Blair Driver, part of my prayers have come true with the fact that you have made it to Belize to study and return with knowledge one gains by the old saying, “Been there, done that”, and now YOU must write a book! I have looked at the team you are to study with and it looks like you are in good hands. Take care and learn a lot.

Hello Belize travelers! I’m enjoying reliving my adventures in Belize through your blog. A shout out to museum rock stars Liz, Jason and Melissa and to my Belize friends Nathan and Yolanda. I believe you are traveling to Xunantunich tomorrow … Climbing to the top was one of my most powerful moments. Did you get a great welcome from the howler monkeys? Love them! Enjoy every single moment travelers … Belize is an adventure that will stay with me forever!
